Turley Richards has one of those careers that keeps throwing up surprises. The Charleston, West Virginia native earned his place in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame for his 1959 single "Makin' Love With My Baby", toured with The Kingsmen in 1967, and landed a spot on The Johnny Carson Show before releasing his debut album on Warner Bros. in 1970. People in the know called him the "West Virginia Superstar". His most quietly significant achievement might be recording the original version of "You Might Need Somebody", a song that later became a UK hit for Randy Crawford in 1981 and again for Shola Ama in 1997. Richards lost his sight entirely by his late twenties, and his autobiography Blindsighted came out in 2014. He still performs around the Louisville area and has worked as a vocal coach, with students reaching the finals of both The Voice and American Idol.
