About
TV on the Radio built their reputation on refusing to sit still genre wise, blending indie rock, art rock, noise pop and psychedelic soul into something that never quite sounds like anyone else. The Brooklyn quartet, anchored by vocalists Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone alongside producer and guitarist Dave Sitek, broke through with their 2004 debut Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, then pulled off something rare: each album landed harder than the last. Return to Cookie Mountain featured David Bowie on backing vocals, and Dear Science swept nearly every best of 2008 list going, from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork to NME. Dear Science debuted at number 12 on the Billboard chart, their highest ever, and the TV performances around that record, including slots on Letterman, SNL and The Colbert Report, pushed the band to a wider audience. They lost bassist Gerard Smith to lung cancer in 2011, a loss that hung over the subsequent album Nine Types of Light. After Seeds in 2014 and a long stretch away from the stage, they returned in late 2024 with a run of live dates tied to a twentieth anniversary reissue of their debut.
