Tyn Wybenga sits at the centre of contemporary Dutch jazz, and NRC once called him the 'future jazz conductor of today', which gives you a sense of the scale people think he operates on. Born in 1993, he leads his Brainteaser Orchestra through a sound that pulls from jazz, hip hop, electronics and classical music at once, stitching together samples and improvisation into something that lands closer to cinematic collage than a conventional ensemble performance. His own reference points tell the story pretty well: somewhere between Frank Zappa, Miles Davis and J Dilla, raw and genuinely unpredictable. He has worked alongside trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and the Metropole Orkest, while drawing his deepest inspiration from the Amsterdam scene.
