About
Saxophonist and composer Kika Sprangers has built a reputation for music that sits somewhere between lyrical warmth and searching melancholy. Her quintet project, river river, uses water as a metaphor for human life, with the music shifting between flowing calm and swirling intensity. Recorded at Wisseloord Studios, the album features Anna Serierse on vocals, Koen Schalkwijk on piano, William Barrett on bass, and Wouter Kühne on drums. Serierse sings almost without words, her voice blending into Sprangers' saxophone to create a single layered sound world. Vocals have long played a central role in Sprangers' work across several projects. She composed commissioned pieces for the North Sea Jazz Festival and TivoliVredenburg, writing for both the Nederlands Kamerkoor and the Nationaal Vrouwen Jeugdkoor. In her Large Ensemble, four singers take on the role that strings would normally fill. Her music tends to leave listeners with what one might describe as a softened and alert feeling, which is probably the most honest way to put it.
