About
Pianist and composer Martin Fondse, originally from Bergen op Zoom, works at the intersection of jazz and something harder to pin down. His Diamonds trio, featuring vocalist Margriet Sjoerdsma and multi instrumentalist Qniverse, draws on an unusually wide range of influences and styles, held together by Fondse's own compositions. He moves between piano, Fender Rhodes and vibrandoneon, giving the group a shifting, textured sound. The trio's project Faces of Earth takes the form of musical portraits of remarkable trees, while Diamonds explores the many facets of the diamond as a concept. Ancient poetry and storytelling feed into the work, ranging from the Epic of Gilgamesh and Shakespeare to texts by indigenous poets and original contemporary lyrics. Fondse is also a regular at Splendor in Amsterdam, the musician run venue known for creative risk taking.
