Few Indonesian bands have managed to stay relevant across three decades the way Ungu has. The Jakarta based pop rock act built their reputation on melancholic, guitar driven ballads, with hits like "Demi Waktu" and "Kekasih Gelapku" dominating radio charts in both Indonesia and Malaysia. Their third album, Melayang (2005), was the real turning point, turning them from a solid local act into a regional phenomenon. What sets Ungu apart from their peers is their role in shaping the "pop religi" genre in Indonesia. Starting with the Ramadan mini album SurgaMu in 2006, they blended rock instrumentation with Islamic spiritual lyrics and orchestral touches, earning praise all the way up to the President of Indonesia. Even a five year stretch where vocalist Pasha served as Deputy Mayor of Palu did not stop them. They returned in full force with a self titled album in 2022, proof that the band has no intention of slowing down.
