Unto Others started out as Idle Hands in Portland, Oregon, with frontman Gabriel Franco setting out to blend the best of classic heavy metal and goth rock into something fresh. Critics reached for comparisons like Iron Maiden meets The Sisters of Mercy, or The Cure making a metal record, which gives you a pretty good sense of the vibe. Their 2019 debut Mana got them noticed, but signing to Roadrunner Records and releasing Strength in 2021 really pushed them into a wider conversation. That album even charted in Germany and Switzerland, included a cover of Pat Benatar's "Hell Is for Children", and earned them Rising Star of the Year from German Metal Hammer readers. They changed their name from Idle Hands to Unto Others in 2020, a legal necessity that came with a bit of a sardonic twist on the Golden Rule. Their third album, Never, Neverland, dropped in 2024 on Century Media and landed at number five on Loudwire's best rock albums of the year list. Franco writes his lyrics as a mix of fact and fiction, drawn to extreme subjects like war, addiction and violence, which fits the band's dark, melodic intensity perfectly.
