Wytch Hazel have been quietly building one of the more distinctive sounds in British heavy metal since forming in Lancaster in 2011. Rooted in the twin guitar interplay of classic acts like Wishbone Ash and Thin Lizzy, with nods to Iron Maiden and Jethro Tull, they carve out a style that feels genuinely vintage without being lazy about it. Comparisons to Blue Öyster Cult and Deep Purple have come up plenty in reviews, and they're not undeserved. Front man Colin Hendra writes lyrics steeped in Christian themes, though the band stops short of calling themselves a Christian act. Their catalogue has grown steadily through Bad Omen Records, from the debut Prelude in 2016 through to III: Pentecost in 2020, which drew some of their strongest praise yet. More recently they released IV: Sacrament in 2023, accompanied by official videos for tracks including Angel of Light and The Fire's Control.
