Vanden Plas have been one of Germany's most theatrically ambitious progressive metal bands since forming in Kaiserslautern in the mid 1980s. Their work constantly blurs the line between album and stage production: their 2006 concept record Christ 0, loosely drawn from The Count of Monte Cristo, was adapted into a full rock opera for German theatre stages two years later, and their Chronicles of the Immortals pair pulled material from fantasy author Wolfgang Hohlbein's Die Chronik der Unsterblichen and a theatre play called Blutnacht. All five members have performed in productions like Jesus Christ Superstar and The Rocky Horror Show, and that theatrical instinct runs through everything they do. Their most recent chapter is The Ghost Xperiment, a double album released across 2019 and 2020, followed by The Empyrean Equation of the Long Lost Things in 2024. A box set called The Epic Works 1991 to 2015 rounded up their entire studio catalogue plus rarities and demo tracks for anyone wanting the full picture.
