About

Various Cruelties are a four piece London band with a sound that sits somewhere between Motown soul and indie rock, which makes them a lot more interesting than most acts coming out of the UK guitar scene. Led by songwriter Liam O'Donnell, who later racked up credits on Fall Out Boy's "Uma Thurman" and MAX's "Lights Down Low", the band built early buzz around a self released single, "If It Wasn't For You", and quickly landed a deal with Mercury Records. Before long they were sharing a stage with Metallica, Lou Reed, and Nile Rodgers on Later... with Jools Holland. Their self titled debut album came out in October 2012, recorded in Los Angeles with producer Tony Hoffer, the man behind records by Foster the People and Beck. "If It Wasn't For You" turned up in a North American holiday campaign for Zales Jewelry that same year, giving the band a notably wide audience. The name, by the way, comes from an Ed Ruscha painting, which feels about right for a band with this much personality.
