Few Belgian acts have managed to blend gypsy music, jazz, soul and pop into something genuinely their own, but Vaya Con Dios pulled it off with a run of records that sold over 10 million albums worldwide. The driving force was Dani Klein, whose unmistakable voice carried the band from its 1986 origins as a Brussels trio through decades of reinvention as, essentially, a one woman operation. Early singles like "Just a Friend of Mine" cracked the French top 10, and "What's a Woman?" went to number one in both the Netherlands and Belgium. The 1992 album Time Flies turned out to be the commercial peak, hitting number one in Switzerland and going platinum in four countries. After a mid 90s burnout and a full disbanding in 2014, Klein brought Vaya Con Dios back in 2022 with a new album titled What's a Woman, revisiting older material in a more intimate setting. She has also spoken about recording an album of entirely new original songs during the pandemic, so the story is far from over.
