About
Also known as: Venom - At War with Satan
Venom named a genre just by releasing an album. Their 1982 record Black Metal gave black metal its name, and together with 1981's Welcome to Hell it sketched out much of what thrash, death and extreme metal would later become. The Newcastle trio played faster and nastier than most of their NWOBHM peers, leaned hard into Satanic imagery mostly for shock value, and were still dismissed by critics as buffoons at the time. Cronos has said the whole thing started as a way to out evil Ozzy Osbourne. They answered the critics who said they couldn't play with At War with Satan in 1984, which gave a whole side of the album to a 20 minute title track. The lineup has shifted plenty over the decades, with hiatuses, reunions and rival versions like Venom Inc., but the classic trio of Cronos, Mantas and Abaddon is the one that built the legend, with Cronos carrying the name forward until his death in 2026.
