About
Also known as: V.I.C, VIC
Villagers of Ioannina City take stoner and psychedelic rock and drench it in the folk music of Epirus, the mountainous region of Greece they come from. The trick is the lead voice: instead of a screaming guitar solo, it's usually a clarinet, backed by the polyphony, odd rhythms and wind instruments like the kaval and bagpipe that define the local tradition. The result sits somewhere between post rock, space rock and something much older. The band formed in 2007 and put out a self released promo in 2010 before landing on Mantra Records, where they released Riza in 2014 and Age of Aquarius in 2019. In 2023 they moved to Napalm Records for the live album Through Space & Time, recorded in Athens. They have played the biggest rock festivals in Greece and sold out major venues there, which is no small feat for a band built around bagpipes and clarinet.
