About

Vivica Genaux is an American coloratura mezzo soprano from Fairbanks, Alaska, who has carved out a remarkable niche in the baroque and bel canto worlds. She is particularly known for her Rossini comic heroines, having performed roles like Rosina, Isabella and Angelina over two hundred times across major companies including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera and stages in Vienna, Berlin, Paris and beyond. Her debut came in Florence in 1994, and she has steadily built a repertoire of 28 roles, around 20 of which are pants roles, some originally written for the castrato voice. Her move into baroque opera has been just as striking. Handel's Arminio opened that door, and she has since worked with conductors like René Jacobs and Fabio Biondi, appearing in productions ranging from Hasse rarities to a rediscovered Alessandro Scarlatti oratorio. Her love of European baroque music eventually drew her to settle in Venice, and her story was captured in the 2004 documentary A Voice Out of the Cold.
