About
Vocaal ensemble NaedenNoen sings Renaissance vocal music, and one of their programmes, called Liefde, lust en last, digs into how love was written about in the 16th century. It pulls together French and Dutch chansons and Italian madrigals by composers such as Josquin Despréz, Pierre de la Rue, Hubert Waelrant, Orlando di Lasso and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. The songs cover the whole messy range: longing for love, young love, burning desire, marriage and fidelity, farewells, unfaithfulness, gossip, forbidden love and some very explicit lyrics. The chanson of that era was a lighter, worldly style that flourished in the Low Countries, and the ensemble leans into its playful side. Between the pieces, texts by Walter van der Sanden help frame each theme.
