About
Vrienden van Vroeger Band is an eight piece ensemble devoted to the songbook of Boudewijn de Groot and his lyricist Lennaert Nijgh, two giants of Dutch language song. The group is led by keyboardist and composer Dick Plat, who used to write for BZN, and Jaap Veerman, the singer from Canyon. Their programme goes through the classics, from the socially critical 'Welterusten, meneer de president' to the tender 'Avond' and the dreamy 'Testament'. Singers, musicians and storytellers share the stage, so it's as much about the tales behind the songs as the songs themselves. It isn't meant as a nostalgia trip: the idea is that these lyrics still feel surprisingly relevant today, and that they've become part of a shared cultural heritage.
