About

Also known as: وعد بوحسون

Waed Bouhassoun lets her voice and oud do almost all the talking, and that restraint is exactly the point. The Syrian singer and oud player has built four solo albums around little more than her own voice and playing, and that intimacy has earned her a reputation for preserving the depth of Syria's musical traditions in a way that feels both ancient and immediate. Her contralto voice carries traditional and mystical Arabic poetry as well as modern poems by Syrian poet Adonis, and her third album, La voix de la passion, digs into Nabatean Bedouin dialect poetry from the historical region of present day Jordan. She has toured internationally since 2010 and contributed to several albums with Catalan musician Jordi Savall, whose Orpheus XXI project she also helped found, training refugee musicians across Europe in traditional music. France recognised her work in 2018 with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and she holds a PhD in ethnomusicology focused on Druze funeral lamentations. Based in Paris, she keeps returning to Syria for research and family.
