About

Patrick Watson's 2010 song "Je te laisserai des mots" became the first French language song to surpass one billion streams on Spotify, which tells you something about the quiet reach this Montreal singer and bandleader has built over the years. His band blends cabaret pop, classical textures and indie rock into something that gets compared to Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley and Pink Floyd, and they back that up with genuinely odd recording choices: Watson once "played" a bicycle in the studio, and percussionist Robbie Kuster used two spoons to create a tremolo effect on an acoustic guitar. Their album Close to Paradise won the Polaris Music Prize in 2007, and Wooden Arms was a Polaris finalist in 2009. Watson has also collaborated widely, co writing and performing on the Cinematic Orchestra's Ma Fleur and touring with artists from John Cale to James Brown and Feist. The band's 2025 collaborative album Uh Oh features Charlotte Cardin, Martha Wainwright and Klô Pelgag among others, and the track "House on Fire" with Martha Wainwright landed on the longlist for the 2026 SOCAN Polaris Song Prize.
