About
Wegz is the Alexandria born rapper widely credited with pulling Egyptian trap and Arabic hip hop into the Arab mainstream. His sound is a genuine hybrid, layering Western trap and R&B with Mahraganat and Shaabi folk music, and later weaving in Afrobeats influences. The 2020 lockdown single "Dorak Gai" was the breakthrough moment, racking up 24 million YouTube views in two months and becoming something of an anthem for a generation stuck indoors. He was Spotify Egypt's most streamed artist three years running, finishing ahead of veteran pop star Amr Diab in 2020, which says a lot. By 2022 he was operating on a much bigger stage. "El Bakht" hit number 14 on the Billboard Arabia Hot 100 and was the most streamed song in the Arab world that year. He also performed at the halftime show of the FIFA World Cup Final at Lusail Stadium, becoming the first Arab rapper ever to do so. On top of the music, he has moved into acting, appearing in the TV comedy series Bimbo on Shahid VIP.
