About
Whitelands built something genuinely special in the London shoegaze scene before calling it a day in 2026. What started as a solo recording project by Etienne Quartey Papafio eventually grew into a full four piece, with Michael Adelaja on guitar, Vanessa Govinden on bass, and Jagun Meseorisa on drums rounding out the lineup. Their debut album Night Bound Eyes Are Blind to the Day, released on Sonic Cathedral in early 2024, made a real impression, landing on NME's list of best debut albums of the year and placing at number 64 on Rough Trade's top 100 albums of 2024. They followed it up with the album Sunlight Echoes in 2026, preceded by singles including Heat of the Summer, Glance, and Songbird (Forever). The video for Glance featured actors David Jonsson and Honor Swinton Byrne. Shortly after the album dropped, the band announced they were disbanding.
