William Elliott Whitmore has one of those voices that stops you cold, a deep baritone that sounds like it came straight out of the Iowa soil he still farms. Based in rural Lee County, he plays roots folk with banjo and guitar, drawing on American blues and country traditions, and the grief that shaped his songwriting runs all through his first three Southern Records releases: Hymns for the Hopeless, Ashes to Dust, and Song of the Blackbird, a loose trilogy about processing loss. That raw, plainspoken quality earned him spots on tour with everyone from Chris Cornell to Frank Turner and Converge, which is a pretty wide stylistic stretch. His 2009 ANTI debut Animals in the Dark was a full concept album and cracked the Billboard Heatseekers chart. He switched lanes in 2018 with Kilonova, a covers record pulling from Bad Religion, Johnny Cash, Captain Beefheart and ZZ Top. He also runs a side project called Middle Western with musician and producer David Zollo. His 2020 album I'm With You came out on Bloodshot Records, and 2024 saw another release, Silently, The Mind Breaks.
