About
Named after the 1968 British horror film, Witchfinder General came out of Stourbridge carrying the unmistakable weight of Black Sabbath in their sound. That raw, post Sabbath grind earned them a reputation as one of the true pioneers of doom metal, even if the commercial success enjoyed by some of their new wave of British heavy metal peers largely passed them by. Their debut album Death Penalty arrived in 1982, followed by Friends of Hell a year later, and both records were as notorious for their provocative covers as for the music inside. The band split in 1984 before their importance was really understood, which is a pattern that crops up a lot with genre founders. They reformed in 2006 with a new vocalist, Gary Martin, and released the compilation Buried Amongst the Ruins alongside archival live material. Their third full studio album, Resurrected, followed in 2008, giving a new generation of doom fans a proper look at what the fuss had always been about.
