About
WIZO have been one of Germany's most distinctive punk outfits since forming in Sindelfingen in 1985, blending fast melodic punk rock with lyrics that swing between sharp political commentary and outright humour. That mix put them squarely in the German Fun Punk movement, and their insistence on writing in German was a conscious choice: vocalist and main songwriter Axel Kurth has talked about how German lyrics are essential for the words and music to truly click. Their influences include Normahl, Hass, and The Exploited, and that lineage shows. The band pulled off some genuinely wild career moments: a 1993 Ace of Base cover that landed them on MTV, a 100,000 selling album in Uuaarrgh!, distribution through Fat Wreck Chords for the American market, and a slot on the inaugural Vans Warped Tour in 1995. They have never been shy about their politics either, openly anti fascist and vocal about equality for women, queer people, and other marginalised groups. Their album Bleib Tapfer was even indexed by German authorities for supposedly glorifying violence, which probably tells you everything about how much edge the band carries.
