About
Wye Oak is a Baltimore duo with a genuinely unusual setup: Jenn Wasner handles lead vocals and guitar, while Andy Stack plays drums and keyboards at the same time, using his feet and right hand for drums and his left hand for bass lines. That multi tasking backbone gives the band a fuller sound than you'd expect from two people. Their music sits somewhere between earnest indie folk and dream pop, with some noise rock edges that keep it from feeling too soft. They built a steady catalogue on Merge Records, starting with If Children and The Knot before Civilian in 2011 brought wider attention, partly thanks to its title track appearing in The Walking Dead. Shriek in 2014 pushed further into synth driven territory, and the 2018 album The Louder I Call, the Faster It Runs showed them still willing to shift shape. Compilation releases in 2021 and 2023 make a good case for how much ground they've covered.
