About
YOB are a doom metal trio from Eugene, Oregon, built around the guitar and vocals of Michael Scheidt, whose sound pulls from Black Sabbath, Neurosis, King Crimson, and Cathedral, among many others. That wide frame of reference shapes music that is slow, massive, and deeply textured, fitting equally into doom, sludge, and post metal territory. After an initial run of albums on Metal Blade Records, the band split in 2006, only to reform two years later with renewed purpose. The comeback produced some of their most celebrated work. Clearing the Path to Ascend, released on Neurot Recordings in 2014, drew serious attention including praise from Rolling Stone, a rare crossover for this corner of heavy music. Then a serious health scare for Scheidt in early 2017 fed directly into Our Raw Heart, released on Relapse Records in 2018. Drummer Dave French joined in 2023, keeping the band's lineup locked in and the machinery running.
