Youngblood Brass Band started out in 1995 as the One Lard Biskit Brass Band, blending New Orleans brass traditions, Midwestern drum corps energy, and hip hop into something genuinely hard to categorise. Based in Madison, Wisconsin, they hit their stride with the 2000 album Unlearn, which brought in guests like Talib Kweli and Ike Willis and earned them a deal with Ozone Music NYC. That led to center:level:roar in 2003, widely considered a high point for the band. When founding sousaphonist and arranger Nat McIntosh left in 2004, the sound shifted toward a harder punk and hip hop edge, documented on Live. Places. and Is That a Riot?. McIntosh eventually returned for 2013's Pax Volumi on Tru Thoughts, and the band marked their twentieth anniversary with the compilation 20 Years Young in 2017. They have also released sheet music transcriptions of their full catalogue, since university and high school ensembles have long been performing their material.
