About
Yumi Zouma started the way almost no band does: members scattered across different countries, swapping files over email after the Christchurch earthquake pushed them apart. That remote, lo fi process caught the ear of Brooklyn label Cascine before the group had ever rehearsed in the same room, let alone played a show. Their early dream pop sound, hazy and synth driven, earned them coverage from Pitchfork and The Guardian and tours alongside Lorde and Jamie xx. Over four albums they kept evolving. Yoncalla was tracked at Philippe Zdar's Motorbass studio in Paris and leaned into classic synth pop, while Willowbank brought them into a proper studio together for the first time, adding live jazz drumming and a warmer, more organic feel. Their 2020 record Truth or Consequences landed on Polyvinyl and Inertia Music. Most recently, their fifth album No Love Lost to Kindness signals a deliberate shift, swapping soft focus production for harder guitars and a more emotionally exposed sound.
