Few Brazilian artists blend rock, forró and northeastern folk as naturally as Zé Ramalho. Born in Brejo do Cruz, Paraíba, he built a career around rootsy MPB with a strong social conscience, his lyrics consistently circling the hardships faced by ordinary Brazilians. His 1975 debut Paêbirú, recorded with Lula Côrtes on the tiny Rozenblit label, is now a prized rarity in international collector circles, while later songs like Admirável Gado Novo became nationwide touchstones, serving as the opening theme of the hit soap opera O Rei do Gado. Over a catalogue stretching well past twenty studio albums, Ramalho has collaborated with key MPB figures including Alceu Valença and Geraldo Azevedo, and recorded the celebrated live project O Grande Encontro with his cousin Elba Ramalho. That record went Gold and Platinum on the back of over 300,000 copies sold. He has also paid tribute to rock legend Raul Seixas with a full cover album, showing he never lost his taste for electric sounds alongside his northeastern roots.
