About
Also known as: Zemfira, Zemfira Talgatovna Ramazanova, Zemphira, Zемфира, Земфира Талгатовна Рамазанова
With over 3 million records sold and a career stretching back to 1998, Zemfira carved out a genuinely unique space in Russian rock as one of the few women fronting a serious rock act in that scene. Her debut album arrived in 1999 after producer Leonid Burlakov of Mumiy Troll caught wind of her demo tapes, and singles like AIDS, Arrivederci, and Rockets put her on heavy rotation across Russian radio and TV almost immediately. The follow up PMML landed in March 2000 and made her massive, with tracks like Searching becoming instant crowd favourites and the band landing a headline slot at the Maxidrom festival. Her fourth album Vendetta, released in 2005, pulled together collaborations with multiple musicians and earned strong reviews. A couple of years later, the Déjà Vu tour saw her reworking her catalogue in jazz, ska, bossa nova, and blues arrangements at intimate club venues, a move that showed just how much range she had beyond straight up rock. Her popularity has extended well beyond Russia into other former Soviet republics, making her one of the most recognisable names in post Soviet indie and pop rock.
