The Stadsgehoorzaal Vlaardingen occupies a central spot in the city at Schiedamseweg 51, on a street with deep cultural roots going back to 1817, when the local Harmonie society operated out of the existing film theatre Het Zeepaard on the same road. By 1947 the municipality had concluded that Vlaardingen was being held back culturally by a simple lack of adequate hall space, and in 1950 the decision was made to build a proper public venue in the Harmonie's own garden. The resulting building, designed by Dutch architect Sybold van Ravesteyn, opened in 1952 and has functioned as Vlaardingen's main stage ever since. The façade and theatre café were renovated in 1992, and the café received another substantial overhaul in 1998, though the overall structure has remained largely as Van Ravesteyn conceived it. The venue is multifunctional, operating as both a concert hall and a theatre with a classic proscenium stage and a foyer. Its programming reflects that dual identity, drawing together theatre productions, cabaret, opera and live music under the same roof. Artists who have appeared here range from singer songwriter Spinvis and Dutch theatre performer Simone Kleinsma to guitarist and Golden Earring co founder Rinus Gerritsen, illustrating how the schedule balances pop, rock, classical crossover and spoken word. Anneke van Giersbergen is among the acts with confirmed upcoming dates. In more recent years the building's age has generated ongoing debate about fire safety compliance and whether a major refurbishment or an entirely new location would better serve the city. For now it remains the principal cultural address in Vlaardingen, with more than seven decades of continuous programming behind it.
