The Leidse Schouwburg and the Stadsgehoorzaal form a combined cultural complex on the Breestraat in the center of Leiden, together carrying more than five centuries of performing arts history. The Leidse Schouwburg, established in 1705, holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating theatre in the Netherlands. The Stadsgehoorzaal, Leiden's municipal concert hall built in the early twentieth century, was later incorporated into the same complex, and the two buildings now function as a single venue for a wide range of live events. The Stadsgehoorzaal's main hall is the heart of the concert operation. It can accommodate over 800 seats in a traditional arrangement, but the chairs can also be removed entirely to create space for other formats such as a dinner setting or a standing floor.
