Ewan McVicar presents Club Knuckles

IJver sits in the middle of the NDSM wharf in Amsterdam Noord, inside a former shipbuilding hangar. The industrial shell of the old yard has been kept and put to new use as a café restaurant and event space, and the building takes its atmosphere directly from the shipyard around it. The city's own tourism guide describes it as a hangar turned café restaurant that captures the spirit of Noord, where tasteful reinvention is the local habit. It is open from early in the morning until late at night, which means the same space shifts from breakfast and lunch to dinner and drinks, and from a quiet table to something considerably livelier. The setting is part of the appeal. The terraces, both indoor and outdoor, look out over the street art and graffiti for which the shipyard is known, and there is a covered and heated indoor and outdoor terrace that stays usable through the year. When the sun comes out, the larger sunlit terraces fill up. Inside, IJver leans on its beer: it pours from 20 draught taps, and it presents itself as a place for Amsterdammers, adventurers and committed beer lovers alike, with seasonal food on the menu. Beyond the daily café and restaurant routine, IJver works as a venue for hire. It hosts company parties, staff events, weddings and birthday celebrations, and it offers different spaces and customised events rather than a single fixed format. That flexibility gives it a character somewhere between a neighbourhood second living room and a party location, set among the art, culture and rich history of the NDSM wharf.
