Left of the DialRotterdam
Left of the Dial is not a single building but a showcase festival that takes over the centre of Rotterdam. It began in 2018 as an annual event and has since grown into a springboard for emerging international artists. Rather than centring on one fixed concert hall, the programme moves between locations across the city centre, so visitors spend the weekend walking from one stage to the next. The scale of that venue hopping has increased over the years. In recent editions, around 25 venues in the centre have served as stages, and the historic concert hall De Doelen is among them. Other settings are more unusual. For the 2026 edition, one stage was set up at a location called Leiper Rotterdam, built with a platform sunk about half a metre into the floor. The festival is generally held in October, and recent editions have been described as running over several days, with the programme listing more than 150 artists spread across 30 or more genres. The festival's approach is deliberately even handed. It runs without headliners and gives every band equal attention, which suits its purpose of putting up and coming alternative acts in front of a curious audience. That focus on new names has made it a draw for thousands of music lovers, and local recommendations for rock and alternative live music in Rotterdam regularly point to it alongside permanent venues such as V11 and Roodkapje. For artists, it works as an introduction to the city and its listeners. For audiences, it offers a way to discover a wide range of new music in one concentrated stretch, across rooms that differ greatly in size and character.
