The Laurenskerk, or Great St. Lawrence Church, is the only surviving medieval building in Rotterdam's city centre, constructed between 1449 and 1525 in the late Gothic style. Its position in the Laurenskwartier, between the Markthal and City Hall, has made it one of the city's most recognizable landmarks for centuries. During the Second World War bombing raids, the church sustained severe damage and had to be rebuilt from near scratch, a history that gives the building a significance well beyond its architectural appeal. It is widely understood to represent the resilience of Rotterdam and its people, and that symbolic weight still surrounds the space today. As a concert venue, the Laurenskerk claims the distinction of being the oldest concert hall in Rotterdam. Music has been performed between its walls for centuries, and from the 19th century onward it developed into a serious concert destination, a tradition associated in particular with organist Hendrik de Vries.
