About
The Martinikerk is the oldest church in Groningen, a Gothic cruciform structure whose origins trace back to the 13th century, though archaeological research has shown the site itself has been in continuous religious use since at least the early 9th century. The tower, which locals affectionately call "d'Olle Grieze" (the Old Grey One), was built between 1469 and 1482 and rises to 97 metres. Inside, the church preserves substantial wall and vault paintings, including a 16th century depiction of the life of Jesus Christ, as well as several 16th century tombs. Two organs give the space much of its musical character: the main organ, whose earliest instrument on this site dates to 1479 and 1480, was rebuilt by Arp Schnitger in the late 17th century and is one of the most historically significant instruments in the Netherlands. The choir organ, built by Jean Baptiste Le Picard in 1742 for a convent in Limburg, was moved several times before finding a permanent home here in 1939. Both organs were dismantled and stored by organ builder Flentrop in 1976 when the nave was converted into a theatre style hall for performances, and they were reinstalled in 2001 following restoration.
