About
Also known as: 16 Horse Power, 16HP, Sixteen Horsepower
16 Horsepower more or less invented gothic country, taking country rock and soaking it in bluegrass, gospel and Appalachian folk. David Eugene Edwards fronted the band, writing lyrics heavy with religious imagery about guilt, punishment and redemption. The name came from an old American folk song about sixteen horses pulling a loved one's coffin to the graveyard, after they got tired of people linking the original name, Horsepower, to heroin. The core trio of Edwards, bassist Pascal Humbert and drummer Jean Yves Tola made four studio albums, starting with Sackcloth 'n' Ashes in 1996, and built a reputation for intense live shows. Their sound drifted from hard, up tempo rock toward a more melodic folk feel on Secret South and Folklore. They split in 2005, with the members carrying on in Wovenhand and Lilium, but in late 2025 the band announced a reunion after 21 years apart.
