About
Also known as: Aart
Rotterdam born organist Aart Bergwerff has built a career around the pipe organ that spans performance, teaching, and historical consultation. He holds a Prix de Virtuosité from his studies in Paris with Marie Claire Alain and has won prizes at international organ competitions in Bruges, Lausanne, and Groningen. Since 1994 he has taught organ as a principal subject at the Rotterdam Conservatory, where he also covers organ construction and historical development. His advisory work on restorations of historic organs across the Netherlands adds a scholarly dimension to his practice. Bergwerff is closely associated with Simeon ten Holt's Canto Ostinato, which he performs regularly on organ, sometimes alongside piano duo Sandra and Jeroen van Veen and occasionally accompanied by whirling dervish dance. He recorded a solo organ version in 2007, one of the more striking takes on a piece usually associated with multiple pianos. He has also played as a continuo organist and harpsichordist with the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra in Amsterdam and performed the Poulenc Organ Concerto for Het Nationale Ballet.
