French mezzo soprano Adèle Charvet has a knack for the unexpected: on a single October evening in 2019, she stepped in at the last minute during intermission to replace an ailing countertenor in Handel's Messiah, had twenty extra minutes to decipher the score, and walked away with a standing ovation. That kind of composure under pressure feels very on brand for a singer who has racked up prizes at some of Europe's most respected vocal competitions and earned a nomination at the Victoires de la musique classique in 2020. Charvet's range keeps things interesting. Her 2019 album Long time ago, recorded with pianist Susan Manoff for Alpha Classics, blends songs by American and British composers, and she co founded the vocal quartet L'Archipel with fellow Conservatoire de Paris students. On stage she has drawn particular attention for her Mélisande, performed in a Rouen Opera House production. Recent uploads show her tackling everything from Offenbach's Barcarolle to the Chanson Bohème from Carmen, a reminder that her repertoire spans a satisfying stretch of the mezzo canon.
