About
Also known as: Against Me
Against Me! built their reputation the hard way, starting as a solo acoustic project by Laura Jane Grace in 1997 before evolving into one of punk rock's most compelling bands. Their 2007 major label debut New Wave, produced by Butch Vig, broke them to a wider audience, landing at no. 57 on the Billboard 200 and earning Spin's album of the year. But the record that really defined them came later: Transgender Dysphoria Blues, released in 2014 on their own Total Treble label, arrived after Grace publicly came out as a trans woman in 2012 and received serious critical and commercial attention. The band's sound has always been hard to pin down neatly, mixing punk rock urgency with folk and country textures, and their catalogue reflects a restlessness that keeps things interesting. Shape Shift with Me followed in 2016, and though the band eventually entered an indefinite hiatus partly due to the COVID 19 pandemic disrupting recording plans, their catalogue holds up as some of the most emotionally direct punk of their era.
