Romanian singer Alexandra Căpitănescu turned heads when her song "Choke Me" sparked a genuine debate across Europe about lyrics, metaphor, and artistic intent. The track, a genre blending mix of nu metal, rock, pop, and even operatic vocal moments, represented Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 in Vienna and landed in third place with 296 points, the country's highest scoring result ever. The controversy around the repeated phrase "choke me" prompted Căpitănescu to clarify that the song is about self love and breaking free from fear, not romantic relationships or anything literal. She co wrote the track with Călin Grajdan, Silitră Elvis Claudiu, and Ștefan Condrea, building it around a beat Grajdan already had saved on his laptop. Romanian pop musician Majii also contributed to the lyrics. More recently, she has put out a video for a track called "HEAT", suggesting she is keeping the momentum going well beyond the Eurovision stage.
