Few bands defined the dark side of the Seattle sound quite like Alice in Chains. Rooted in heavy metal but swept up in the grunge wave of the early 1990s, they built their reputation on a distinctive vocal style, specifically the eerie, locked harmonies between Layne Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell. Their 1992 album Dirt remains a landmark, with tracks like "Rooster" and "Would?" cementing their place in rock history. Jar of Flies and the self titled Alice in Chains both hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, a rare achievement for a band as sonically uncompromising as this one. After years of inactivity following Staley's death in 2002, the band came back with William DuVall stepping in on vocals. That reunion lineup has now put out three full albums, Black Gives Way to Blue, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, and Rainier Fog, proving the band still has plenty to say. In total they have sold over 30 million RIAA certified records in the US alone.
