About
Also known as: Alice Matthew
Alice Phoebe Lou built her reputation busking on Berlin's S and U Bahn stations and in its parks, turning street corners into a genuine launching pad. The South African singer songwriter, who moved to Berlin from Cape Town at 19, has stayed fiercely independent ever since, self funding six studio albums including Orbit, Paper Castles, and Glow. Her song "She," written for the documentary Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story, landed on the Academy Award shortlist for Best Original Song, which is no small thing for an artist who still busks between tours. Her sound sits somewhere in the indie pop and singer songwriter space, intimate but never slight. Paper Castles earned serious critical attention in 2019, and the video for "Galaxies" featured Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams, shot inside Berlin's Zeiss Planetarium. She also runs a side project called Strongboi, a duo with her band's keyboardist Ziv Yamin, keeping things creative beyond her solo work.
