About

Alon Sariel plays the mandolin with one foot in baroque lute territory and the other in fresh commissions from living composers, which makes him a genuinely unusual figure in the early music world. Born in Beersheba, Israel, he has performed as soloist and conductor with orchestras across Israel and the UK, and appeared at major venues including the Berliner Philharmonie and the Royal Albert Hall. Composers have lined up to write for him, from Michael Wolpe's solo Partita to a full mandolin concerto by Peter Klatzow, and the Sinfonia Concertante "Nedudim" recorded with Kammerorchester Berlin for Neue Meister. In 2015 he founded his own period instrument ensemble, Concerto Foscari, and co founded the quartet PRISMA, giving him the freedom to shape his own programs. His discography on labels like Pentatone and Berlin Classics spans the Plucked Bach series, Vienna Mandolin Stories, and Telemandolin, showing a real appetite for reimagining repertoire through plucked strings rather than just playing what already exists for his instruments.
