Amy Macdonald got her break the old fashioned way: she sent a demo CD to a production company after spotting an ad in NME, and the result was a debut album that sold three million copies and hit number one in the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark and Switzerland. That album, This Is the Life, produced the title track that topped the charts in six countries and became the biggest solo hit by a female artist ever in the Netherlands. Not bad for someone who got a record deal at a time when, as she puts it, everyone else was being discovered on MySpace. Since then Macdonald has built a steady catalogue of guitar driven folk pop and rock, releasing five more studio albums through to The Human Demands in 2020. Her fourth album Under Stars debuted at number two on both the Scottish and UK charts, and she has consistently found her strongest audience across mainland Europe. She even represented Scotland at the Free European Song Contest 2021, finishing fourth with her song Statues. Her sixth studio album, Is This What You've Been Waiting For?, arrived in 2025.
