Ana Frango Elétrico, the stage name of Rio de Janeiro based Ana Fainguelernt, makes music that cheerfully refuses to be categorised. Their own attempt at describing it landed somewhere around "ballad rock jazz" before they gave up and concluded, "it just doesn't need to be something." That spirit runs through everything they do. Their 2019 album Little Electric Chicken Heart pulled together chamber pop, art pop, indie rock and MPB into something that earned a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Portuguese Language Rock or Alternative Album. Their third album Me Chama de Gato Que Eu Sou Sua, released in 2023, stretched even further, drawing on bossa nova, funk, disco, boogie and city pop to explore queer love. Critics called it "a hard grooving time machine." Beyond performing, Fainguelernt produces for other artists and has published a book of poetry, prints and illustrations, making clear the music is just one piece of a much bigger creative picture.
