Arthur Verocai made one of the most quietly radical Brazilian records of the 1970s, then spent three decades writing jingles because almost nobody in Brazil noticed. His 1972 self titled debut blended samba with soul while pulling influences from Miles Davis and Wes Montgomery through to Frank Zappa and Debussy, all filtered through a bossa nova sensibility he traces back to Tom Jobim. He described himself as "a son of bossa," and the album shows it. The real story kicked in during the 2000s, when original vinyl copies started fetching around £2,000 in the UK and the US, and the record built a serious cult following. That revival pulled Verocai back to composing, leading to the album Encore in 2007 and No Vôo do Urubu in 2016, plus collaborations with BadBadNotGood, Hiatus Kaiyote, and Gal Costa. His music has been sampled by Ludacris, Madlib, and Action Bronson, and artists from MF Doom to TV on the Radio have cited him as an influence.
