Andrew Bird's whole sound revolves around an unusual combination: violin looped and layered live on stage, glockenspiel, whistling, and vocals that shift between brooding and playful. He came up through Chicago jazz circles in the late 1990s, playing with Squirrel Nut Zippers and leading his own swing outfit, Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, before breaking away from jazz entirely and reinventing himself as a solo indie folk artist with Weather Systems in 2003. Since then he has built a catalog that moves freely between baroque pop textures and stripped back folk, with Armchair Apocrypha and The Mysterious Production of Eggs among his most celebrated records. He is also known for reworking his songs constantly in live settings, documented through a series of self released Fingerlings EPs. His 2019 album My Finest Work Yet earned a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album, and beyond music he has composed film and TV scores and even acted in the Fargo TV series.
