The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra has been the beating heart of classical music in Flanders since its founding in 1955, when Gaston Ariën set out to build a full time symphony orchestra for Antwerp modelled on the National Orchestra of Belgium. Based at the Queen Elisabeth Hall, it performs across Belgium in venues ranging from Brussels to Bruges, and over the decades it has recorded for labels including Hyperion, Naïve and Phi. The orchestra has passed through a string of notable chief conductors, from Philippe Herreweghe and Jaap van Zweden to Edo de Waart. Elim Chan made history as both the youngest and first female chief conductor when she took the role for the 2019 to 2024 seasons. Marc Albrecht was announced as the next chief conductor, stepping into the role from the 2026 to 2027 season onward. The orchestra has gone through several name changes since 1955, most recently rebranding as the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra in 2017.
