Few bands have pulled off what Arcade Fire managed with their 2004 debut Funeral: instant classic status, near universal critical adoration, and a sound that nobody could quite pin down. The Montreal group blends indie rock, chamber pop, baroque pop, and post punk into something that feels genuinely orchestral, drawing on guitar, violin, cello, harp, accordion, glockenspiel, hurdy gurdy, and more. Their members swap instruments throughout shows, which partly explains why their live performances have always been a thing. The Suburbs won them a Grammy for Album of the Year in 2011, and 2013's Reflektor saw them score a feature film alongside Owen Pallett, earning an Academy Award nomination. Their catalogue keeps growing: sixth album We arrived in 2022, and a seventh record, Pink Elephant, followed in 2025. All seven studio albums have received Grammy nominations for Best Alternative Music Album.
