Arctic Monkeys pulled off something genuinely rare: they built a massive fanbase before most people knew what a blog was, passing demo CDs around at gigs in Sheffield until fans spread the songs across the internet. That groundwork paid off spectacularly when their 2006 debut, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, became the fastest selling debut in British chart history and picked up a Mercury Prize and a Brit Award for Best British Album. From the post punk snap of those early records to the piano led, lounge tinged Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino, the band has never stayed still. Their fifth album AM, driven by the massive single Do I Wanna Know, broke them wide open in the US, topping four Billboard charts and going 4x Platinum stateside. The Car, their seventh album, landed Grammy and Mercury Prize nominations, and their UK record of debuting at number one with their first five albums on an independent label still stands.
